being independent.

Facing financial independence at 18 years old, compared with the UK average of 24 (for leaving the family home), Care-experienced young people are more likely to be unemployed, not in education, and at higher risk of homelessness.

Responding to the needs of the care-experienced people we’ve worked with over the last few years*, we sought grant funding to deliver a tailored programme.

Promoted through the Care Leaver Covenant, this 4 to 8 week programme offers 18-25 year olds:

  • Hands-on workshops in life skills (DIY, cooking, cleaning)

  • Improving financial literacy through practical ‘Money Matters’ sessions

  • Multi-sector work experience opportunities

  • 1:1 Information, Advice and Guidance

  • Employability coaching …all in one place (well two places, as you can sign up to this programme at our Teesside or Sunderland Hub)

*In honesty, until 2023 we didn't offer specialist support  to care-experienced young people. This is a shared common experience of the long-term unemployed or ex-offender target groups we’ve been effective in supporting.

We currently deliver training in Teesside as part of the Adult Education Budget, through New College Durham and TVCA. The aim of the fund is to help unemployed people progress towards employment through access to learning and training opportunities. From 1st April 2024, our Skill Share 4 week programmes will be funded through The National Lottery's Reaching Communities Fund. The Being Independent programme for Care Experienced Young People is funded by a Nationwide Community grant.
